Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Theatre Information
The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Theatre is part of the famous Scranton Cultural Center at the Masonic Temple. The Scranton, Pennsylvania based cultural center was built from what was formerly the Masonic Temple and Scottish Rite Cathedral with the stated goal “to rejuvenate a national architectural structure as a regional center for arts, education, and community activities appealing to all ages.” To this end, the owners have hosted national Broadway tours, musical concerts and performances from local and nationally recognized talent, musicals and dramatic productions from local and national production companies, dance recitals, operas, and more. The venue also hosts a variety of classes and fundraisers to help support the arts by providing a quality education for interested musicians and performers.
The building was first designed by Architect Raymond Hood with Godley & Fouilhoux and Harry V.K. Henderson. The building was designed in a unique combination of styles using both Gothic Revival and Romanesque Revival-Richardsonian Romanesque architecture with Art Deco influences. The building was originally completed in 1930 and designed to house a Scottish Rite Cathedral and a Masonic Lodge with housing spaces for public use. The building was also, clearly, a tribute to Freemasonry.
As for the Weinberg Theatre, it has capacity for over 1,800 visitors and is commonly used for concerts, lectures, Broadway tours, and other forms of entertainment. The design accentuates the classical feel of the larger structure offering a historic feel to guests. The age and cultural value of the venue and its surrounding facility made it an easy choice for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places.
